A Dozen Ways
You Can Make the World More Beautiful As Inspired by "Chicken Soup
for the Gardener's Soul"

Pat Stone, Carol Sturgulewski
1. Donate flowers to your local hospital's maternity ward or other patient
care area. Ask the staff to make sure the flowers are given to someone who
hasn't received any, someone who needs a little boost--just like in our
story, "A Gift of Grace."
2. Are you going to a wedding this weekend? If the bride is carrying ivy
or another plant that can be rooted from a cutting, offer to create a
"Wedding Gift" for her, as our story describes.
3. Plant a tree for your town! If one boy in Los Angeles can get "A
Million Trees" planted, you can make your part of the world a bit
more beautiful--and healthier, too--one tree at a time.
4. If you have pets at home, consider their welfare and the safety of
other wildlife by planning a fenced run, as described in "The
$100,000 Stray Cat."
5. Join the thousands of gardeners around the country who help the poor
and homeless. Jeff Lowenfels tells you how in "Plant a Row for the
Hungry," a story describing this nationwide program.
6. Many developmentally disabled people live in group homes in residential
neighborhoods. Do they need help with a garden? Share your talents and
your heart with them, as in "The Perfect Garden."
7. Sow a surprise! This fall, secretly tuck crocus bulbs into a loved
one's lawn or garden spot, and they'll have a special surprise in the
spring! Read about it in "A Hug from Heaven."
8. Here's another autumn idea: Take the kids dancing in a wildflower
meadow, wooly socks and all. Then plant them, as in our story "The
Sock Garden," and see what sprouts!
9. Are you having a hard time communicating with a friend, a co-worker, or
even someone you love? Take a cue from "A Veteran's Garden" and
rehearse by talking to your plants.
10. Searching for a special present for a gardener? "My Money
Tree" has ideas for the perfect gardening gift--starting with a
sapling decorated with dollar bills!
11. Get together with your neighbors to plant a corner of your
neighborhood with something special that all can share--whether it's
flowering bulbs, as in "The Tulip Tradition," or a
community garden, as in "The Kids on the Point."
12. Do you want to make the world a better place, or are you faced with a
daunting project, but not sure where to start? Take a tip from our
stories, "You Forgot Something" by Dr. Bernie Siegel or
"One at a Time": Go bit by bit, but start today!
"Chicken Soup for the Gardener's Soul" celebrates the beauty
of the plant world, and how it makes a difference in the lives of
gardeners and non-gardeners alike. We hope you'll find inspiration
in these ideas, and in the stories from our book. If you have other
