OUR MISSION:
Be the Star You Are!™ acquires, promotes and distributes books and other media to empower youth at risk to raise their skills and self esteem to improve their daily lives.  This media ranges from education and advisement to inspiration and guidance which covers every aspect of life from abuse through money management.  Be the Star You Are!™ has no religious or political agendas or affiliations as it caters to the literate and illiterate by providing audio tapes and videos as well as books to give these kids a head start in their lives so they can beat the odds.

Summer time..barbecues, swimming, ripe tomatoes, corn on the cob, kids playing until dusk, and lots of sunshine!  How I love this warm weather and the promise of happy days.  The volunteers have been especially busy here at the charity preparing for our first fundraiser in over two years.  We hope you'll want to participate in our golf tournament to be held at the exclusive Chardonnay Golf Course  in Napa Valley on Sunday, October 20.  It will be a full day of fun, raffles, prizes (maybe even win a CAR) great food and a silent auction.  Discounted rooms are available at three locations if you decide to make a weekend of it. If you don't golf but just want to come for the dinner and festivities, you can buy a ticket for that as well.  Make  a difference for the youth at risk we serve by getting involved in our fundraiser by golfing, sponsoring or donating items.  It's tax deductible, too. WHAT GIFTS CAN WE GIVE OUR CHILDREN?

    "Attention, for one day it will be too late.
    A sense of value, the inalienable place of the individual in the scheme of  things, with all that accrues to the individual self-reliance, courage, conviction, self-respect, and respect for others.
    A sense of humor.  Laughter encourages life.

THE FOUR CONDITIONS OF SELF-ESTEEM

Self Esteem is achieved when four critical factors are present in a person's life.  These four elements are a feeling of being unique, knowing that there are role models to emulate, believing in personal power and a feeling of connectiveness to others. 

Let's take a closer look at each component to find the ingredients for true self-esteem:

1. Uniqueness
 *knowing that there is something special about oneself
 *an ability to express oneself
 *respecting oneself as an individual
 *enjoying being different without hurting others
 *an awareness of the uniqueness of others
 *an awareness that others regard me as special
 *feeling that I know things or can do things that others can't

2. Role Models
 *knowing people worth emulating
 *having a sense of order
 *being able to make sense out of chaos
 *knowing the standards of performance by which we are evaluated
 *knowing where we are going and working towards a goal
 *believing in core values
 *confidently distinguishing between good and evil
 *not being intimidated by new things
 *measured risk taking

3. Personal Power
 *believing that I achieve whatever I believe in and work for
 *knowing that I can handle the stresses of life
 *knowing that help is always available
 *responsibility to fulfill obligations to oneself and others
 *looking at problems as challenges and finding solutions
 *being able to utilize personal skills without apologies
 *believing that I am in charge of my own life
 * choice is always an option
 *being able to say "NO" and mean it
 *saying "Yes" to living

4. Connection to the world
 *being part of a community
 *relating to people, places, and things
 *identifying with a group
 *feeling of belonging and importance within the world
 *connecting with my heritage
 *knowing that one person does make a difference
