Be the Star You Are!™ is a library of books and other media donated to youth at risk to raise their skills and self esteem to improve their daily lives. This media ranges from education and advisement to inspiration and guidance which covers every aspect of life from abuse through money management. Be the Star You Are!™ has no religious or political agendas or affiliations as it caters to the literate and illiterate by providing audio tapes and videos as well as books to give these kids a head start in their lives so they can beat the odds.

THE HOLIDAYS MAKE YOU SICK?

It’s just days after
Thanksgiving and I’m recuperating from an upper respiratory infection that
has kept me in bed with fever, chills, and congestion for days ingesting only
medications, honey lemon tea and
broth. My voice is a mere croak.
How did this happen, I wonder? Could
it have anything to do with the fact that besides keeping the charity going at
full speed to prepare for the holiday book giving, I’ve helped move both my
children to new locations while decorating their houses? Or is the culprit the
work of producing and hosting the radio shows?
Or could my malady be due to the three new book proposals I’m
writing, or the five speeches I’m developing for the lecture series, or the
training of the volunteers, or the bulbs that I’m planting, or the stress of
the holidays yet to come? Or, or,
or, or! There are a thousand excuses. I
should know better, but like all of us, I am a mere mortal in training.
“Should and could do little good” has always been one of my
mantras. If your December is starting out like mine, take heed. REST! BREATHE!
SURRENDER!
It is okay to surrender
sometimes, to slow down, to take it easy, to halt. Take a deep breath and
allow your body and brain to be filled with healthy oxygen.
What I’ve learned by surrendering is that the world goes on. When we
stop and keep quiet for a while, we can see our problems and challenges in a
different light. Sometimes a solution appears as if by magic. It was always
there, of course, but our busyness kept us from receiving the message clearly.

personal story on how what we witness in the media impacts our lives either
positively or negatively. Media
includes television, radio, films, newspapers, magazines, and internet.
2.Write an essay or
personal story on powerful parenting skills and how children are taught
morals, ethics, respect, and discipline through the actions of adults.
3. Write an essay or
personal story on the value of reading to children and the importance of
fostering literacy programs in our country.

Alan Outman is 15 and from New York. He is our energetic Teen Publicity Director who works
tirelessly to get the word out about the charity to the media and the world.
He LOVES working with Be
the Star You Are!™ and says
that his responsibilities as a volunteer have changed his life for the better,
giving him confidence and a feeling of self worth.

Neeku Mahdavian
, 13, is our teen chair person for the Teen STAR Book Review team. She
has many young people, including junior high students, Mahsa
M., Niki K.
and Elise Sydora who are writing reviews of books to better help parents
select the best reading materials for their children.
Kaleigh Thorpe, 11, who was
recently crowned Miss San Leandro Jr. Teen America 2005 writes powerful
reviews and feels it is important to volunteer to give back to the community.
Brianna Castro is our high
school chairperson of our book distribution program. She has several teen volunteers from Carondolet High School
working with her.
Cyrstal Goodfellow graduated
from college in June, but continues to assist our charity, most recently
helping with a TV and radio PSAs.
Heather Brittany is the co-host
of the radio show and prepares diligently each week to present her segment to
enable our youth to live fuller lives.
Earlier in the year, numerous students from St.
Mary’s College and San Francisco State University worked to create new
business plans, financial data, and office re-organization.
My former acting student and caring personality, Shelly
Hyder, sponsored a Comedy Night fundraiser.

that time of year again when visions of sugarplums, Santa Claus, and Hanukkah
