Thank you. BE THE STAR YOU ARE™! is a library of books and other media donated to youth at risk to raise their skills and self esteem to improve their daily lives. This media ranges from education and advisement to inspiration and guidance which covers every aspect of life from abuse through money management. BE THE STAR YOU ARE™! has no religious or political agendas or affiliations as it caters to the literate and illiterate by providing audio tapes and videos as well as books to give these kids a head start in their lives so they can beat the odds. "The fast pace of our lives makes it difficult for us to find grace in the present moment, and when the simple gifts at our fingertips cease to nourish us, we have a tendency to crave the sensational." Macrina WiederkehrEllen Peterson, of the
ACALANES DRUG/ALCOHOL TASK FORCE sends out a biweekly report on the community
concern about alcohol, drugs, and our young people.
She asks that this information be copied and shared so that
everyone can become more aware of the challenges facing our young people
today. Here is the latest report
which is extremely sobering. Stress affects teens and children as well as adults. Terrorism and talk of war are recent stressors, but the fast pace of our culture and its confusing messages have been taking their toll on our young people for a long time without making headlines. According to Senator Vasconcellos’s office, adolescent suicide has increased 400% in 30 years, and adolescent depression has increased 1,000% in 40 years. Hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder have increased 700% in two decades. One in 30 youngsters aged 5 to 19 is using Ritalin. 30% of children in grades 6-10 are involved in bullying at school. 68% of high school students admit to cheating on tests and 84% of college students believe they need to cheat to get ahead. Alcohol and other drugs are ways to escape stress, but they actually just postpone dealing with its causes. If we are to reduce the effects of drugs in our culture, we need to reduce stressors. (Sources: National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, U.S. News and World Report, Stephanie Mann, Street Safe Kids.) Coping: is a learned skill. Children whose lives have been relatively carefree can have trouble dealing with the rejection, loss, fear and confusion that comes with adolescence. Because these feelings are new, some conclude that they are permanent, that the situation is more serious than it really is, or that there are no solutions. "Here--take this. It will make you feel better," suddenly has great appeal when a teen is looking for a way out. Alcohol and drugs offer a quick escape chute from pain. What can adults do? Talk helps. Listening too. And sharing stories about your own uncertainties and difficult feelings (either past or present) and what you do to cope without alcohol or drugs offers teens a roadmap through tough times. Honesty and humility go a long way with teens. It also helps them see that everyone struggles, even adults. Sobering Thoughts: Ninth graders who drink are almost twice as likely to attempt suicide as those who don’t. (Source: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.) Eating Disorders: are associated with stress too. Young people who starve themselves, overeat, or binge and purge may be seeking ways to control their environment through food. And there is a correlation between alcoholism and eating disorders, especially bulimia. Craving, obsession, and control issues are signs of trouble with eating disorders or drug addiction. Thank you, Ellen, for your ongoing concern for our youth. We must all do our part to help our young people grow into productive citizens. Care, be aware, and share. I hope to see you at our family fundraiser to support youth at risk at Chevy’s restaurant in Pleasant Hill on Monday, November 18, 2002. Pick up some great Christmas gifts at our raffle, silent auction, and book sale while making a tax deductible donation. Details are below. Hasta la vista!Cynthia Brian Be
