Thank you. BE THE STAR YOU ARE™! is a library of books and other media donated to youth at risk to raise their skills and self esteem to improve their daily lives. This media ranges from education and advisement to inspiration and guidance which covers every aspect of life from abuse through money management. BE THE STAR YOU ARE™! has no religious or political agendas or affiliations as it caters to the literate and illiterate by providing audio tapes and videos as well as books to give these kids a head start in their lives so they can beat the odds. *Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars.Henry Van dyke This morning I was speaking
with my daughter and told her that I was climbing the 102 steps twice a day
now that autumn had arrived to check on our animals. (We have a barnyard full
of animals that were abandoned by owners who didn’t want them, so we adopted
and very much love this menagerie). There have been numerous coyotes, foxes,
and raccoons bold enough to loiter on our back porch recently.
The chickens had begun cracking and eating their eggs, so I figured
they were nervous, too. She listened, then very astutely, informed me that I
wasn’t “really” going up to the barnyard to check on the egg production
or be a body guard. Heather felt I was craving the simplicity of just
“being” with our critters because my own life was so hectic.
Her comment made me pause. She
was absolutely right. I need the
vulnerability of the animals just as much as they need me to be their
advocate. When I spend time with
my goats, ducks, chickens, geese, pigs, rabbits, dogs, and cats, I feel more
in balance and more attune to what’s happening in the cycle of life.
By slowing down, my brain gets clearer, and my soul is nurtured. Autumn is a time of
transition and transformation. Leaves
are turning yellow, orange, and brilliant hues of red signaling the approach
of a rest in nature. The air is
cooler, the days are shorter. The seasons are changing once again. I’m not so certain I like
the change. I’m a hot weather person. I adore the freshness of spring,
the warmth of summer, and the colors of fall. It is the shift to winter that I
dread. Winter depresses me, it’s just too cold, dark, and gray.
But without the rain, I’d have no beautiful flowers in spring time.
If life was all sunshine and hot weather, the world would be a giant desert.
Therefore, there is a lesson in the seasons:
change is learning, learning
is change. The seasons remind us all
that there is a time for everything. We must discover ways to enjoy the
interludes of living. It is the pauses between the notes that create the
music. Spend time with nature,
pet an animal, smell the last of the roses.
Give yourself a break! It is okay to rest. Take time to just “be.” May you find your purpose
in this season and celebrate each moment of your life. Carpe diem.
Seize the day! Blessings, Cynthia Brian Our charity couldn’t
provide the amount of resources to the numerous youth at risk agencies if it
weren’t for the generous contributions of authors and publishers. We want to
take this opportunity to thank Sounds
True Publishers, The Kensington Publishing Corporation , Publishers Marketing Association, and Patrick Combs author of
Major in Success for their
recent donations of books, audio tapes, and CD’s to Be
the Star You Are!™ charity. We
asked for donations and they responded generously.
Thank you so much. Other people who have been
of great service to us are TJ Van Buren of Office Depot in San
Francisco. He’s been dedicated
to helping Be the Star You Are!™ with its
printing needs since our inception. Thank
you, TJ, for always saying “YES!”. A
new helper is Randy Higbee from Costa Mesa, who calls himself The King of
Frame. His company is providing shipping services from authors and publishers
in Southern California to our offices up north.

Thank you, thank you!. Our thanks to the Community
Service Program, Carondolet High School Freshman Girls have adopted Be the
Star You Are!™ as
their charity. The girls are collecting books on a regular basis. Special
gratitude to Sister Dorothy who is a terrific advocate and organizer of the
group. Speaking of thank you’s,
we opened a big envelope the other day and out fell numerous hand written
notes from the girls at Chris Adams Girls Center.
Our hearts were deeply touched by their kind words. Our thanks to Laren
Rogers who purchased enough copies of the book, Be
the Star You Are!™ to donate to each girl in this center. Thank
you, Laren. Every Monday, our
Program Director, Pat Hallberg, gives her time and energy to our literacy
outreach program, Reading SPELLS Success, and
reads to these girls at bedtime. We’d
like to share with you some of their comments.
Thank you, girls, for writing; we are so happy that Be
the Star You Are!™ is making a positive difference in your lives. Comments are taken
directly as received from the handwritten letters and cards from the girls in
the juvenile hall facilities. No editing has been done, names are with held
for privacy). *” I love to be
read to. As you know I am away
from home from bad things I did in the past.
And with 20 girls, things could get crazy around here!
But when Nanna, the reader, comes I feel like a kid again.
I even fall asleep. So you
see it makes it so much more better to be here.
Yes, I enjoy our reader.” *”I
enjoy you coming down to read to us! You’re cool and fun and sweet and most
Monday nights I look forward to listening to you. I get all excited and hope
you come. It’s really nice to
have you around. Thank you. “ *”I
think the reader is nice and sweet, I really appreciate her coming on her time
to do stuff like this for us. Thank
you. “ *”Well,
it’s me, and I haven’t been here forever yet…but I am glad that I got to
know a little about you. I do
know that you are patient and calm. And
you do show the girls in here lots of love and respect.
And we’re glad that you take time out to do this with us because most
people wouldn’t. A lot of
thanks.” *”I
really like it when you come .on your own time to read to us.
I oppreshiate it “ *”
Well, me, I love it when the reader comes. She is so nice and it’s not just that she reads good, but
she also talks to us, all of us. She
also tries to get us Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Her voice is very
soothing so even if we don’t come out of our room to listen to her we still
hear her though out doors. And
her voice helps me sleep. I have
problems with sleeping. But every
Monday, I sleep great. I wish she
would are pretty cool. I like
them. From hearing all the
stories I started reading mostly Chicken Soup.
I never read before so she has really helped me in many ways. I wish she could read more nights a week.
I look forward to every Monday. We
love listening to ‘THE
READER’.” *”I
really like the reader because I get to get out of my room and she makes me
sleep well sometimes.” Be
