Dear Supporters of Be the STAR You Are!™
Diablo Magazine’s March 2000 feature was on kids. The first paragraph began: “Today’s headlines are a wake-up call: The massacre at Columbine High School. Children killing children. The high prevalence of illegal drugs in high schools and on college campuses. Teen pregnancy. Cheating on exams. These problems don’t just concern parents and educators; they’re a challenge to our whole society for they are an indication that not only are we failing our youth, but if we don’t find solutions to such social issues, our future lies under an ominous shadow.”

We at Be the Star You Are!™ couldn’t agree more. What’s wrong with our nation’s kids? The media is constantly barraging our brains with violence, promiscuity, negativity and disrespectful individuals. Even a recent issue of People Magazine asked the question: “Is television going too far?” Money has become the overall god worshipped at the altars of Hollywood and life is imitating art.

A new report reveals citizen’s thoughts and ideas for change. America’s main worries about young people have shifted from drugs, violence and teen pregnancy to a broader concern about too many kids lacking a sense of right and wrong, respect for authority or responsibility for their actions, according to a report recently released by the National Issue Forums (NIF) Institute.

The NIF Institute, based in Dayton, Ohio, selected three locations across the country to release its report "Our Nation’s Kids: Is Something Wrong?". The NIF report was released in Chicago, Illinois and Charleston, West Virginia.

National Issues Forums bring together citizens from around the country to discuss challenging social and political issues of the day. Over the past year, hundreds of civic and educational organizations convened to discuss the problems of today’s troubled youth. This report is based on the thinking of thousands of citizens in nearly 100 forums conducted in 31 states, including California. Research methods included forum observations, interviews and pre-and post-forum questionnaires.

Overall findings pointed toward parents as a fundamental root of the problem with today’s kids. According to participants, the role of parents is undervalued in this country. But because some parents are not able, or not willing, to spend adequate time with their children, reversing the situation will take the support of our schools and the rest of society, including a few specific things government agencies should do.

Be the Star You Are!™ as a self help positive programming media library, is working tirelessly to bring better tools for living to groups in need of hope and inspiration. We must start at the root level to help our kids get a good sense of themselves, of their families and of their communities. Every individual can make a difference in another’s life. We must stand up for strong beliefs and family values and work together to find the solutions to a society that is plagued with tragedies. Let’s heed this wake-up call.

WHAT’S NEW AT BE THE STAR YOU ARE!™

Summer is here and spirits seem to be soaring. Lots has been accomplished with our non-profit in the last few months. We are moved into a new office space and have several wonderful volunteers who are working with us. Donations of positive materials continue to arrive daily and our distributions to other charities has begun. We will be monitoring the progress and recording the results of our efforts. Our radio program is still featuring the best minds in personal growth and we have a fun fundraiser planned. We have established a membership program to receive financial support and are doing research and writing papers on the power of positive programming.

Here are a couple of important notes:

Our radio program, Starstyle™, Be the Star You Are!™ is now broadcast on Sundays from 4-5pm on Business Radio 1220 am, KBZS. For a list of our upcoming guests, please view our guest roster. Dr. Deepak Chopra was a recent guest. Remember we are streamed live on this website.
We are always seeking sponsorship for our events. Please call our office if you can assist us with sponsorship or finding sponsors.
Office equipment is still needed...a plain paper fax, computer, copy machine, audio tape dubbing machine, go-video dubbing VCR, and other office supplies. Keep us in mind for donations
Tax time is here and if you still need a write-off for 1999, think about writing a check to Be the Star You Are!™ instead of paying the extra money to Uncle Sam!
