Volunteering and community service is often associated with directly helping others in dire need, like helping save lives at a hospital or cooking food for the hungry. Kenneth Jeon hosts and interviews Becca Tankersley and Dominic Maciel from LionsHeart, a nonprofit organization focused on inspiring teens to volunteer in their community, creating a new generation of leaders that are dedicated to positive social impact and providing needed resources for causes that ignite their passions. Katie Choo, author of the chapter on Volunteering in the new book, Be the Star You Are! Millennials to Boomers Celebrating Gifts of Positive Voices in a Changing Digital World, joins Kenneth to discuss the importance of volunteer work. Bios:
Becca Tankersley is the Executive Director of Lion's Heart and responsible for all major decisions for Lion’s Heart, and reports to the Board of Directors. She also currently serves as a member on the OneOC Nonprofit Advisory Council in Santa Ana, California. She became involved in the nonprofit world at a very young age; her first memory volunteering is at 5 years old. After high school Rebecca did a year of AmeriCorps with City Year Rhode Island. It was there that she realized there was no other career path for her, and she dedicated herself to a lifetime of service. She founded a LGBT rights organization at the age of 20, while attending Wilmington University earning her degree in Organizational Dynamics (Nonprofit Management.) She began her career with the American Cancer Society and came to Lion's Heart from the Girl Scouts of Orange County. She is extremely passionate about community service and founded the Orange County chapter of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network. She currently lives in Anaheim Hills with her husband and house rabbit, Albus.
Dominic Maciel is serving his second year of service as a CalSERVES AmeriCorps VIP Service Enterprise Fellow. As an AmeriCorps Fellow, Dominic works to develop a volunteer program that supports and expands the services that Lion’s Heart provides, specifically through education outreach. He is also the host of the Lion's Heart podcast, TOBY Talk.
