SUMMER on EXPRESSYOURSELF!™ TEEN RADIO with Julia and Keerthi
Keerthi and Julia offer a fun-filled sunshine show about summer. Keerthi starts off with a hysterical riff on how she is now a senior citizen at the old age of 16 with all the wisdom that entails. With oodles of humor with concrete ideas on how to spend a productive summer. A few of her suggestions include starting a business, volunteering, reading, interning, and sleeping. Then Julia takes the stage to share her experiences with triathlons. Swimming, running, and biking are the stuff of superheroes, and Julia breaks it down with tips on how to get started this summer. She says that the triathlon is one of the hardest things she’s ever done and the most rewarding. Learn how to suffer and smile. Move forward when your body screams stop. Fall apart and keep going anyway.
Don’t miss this fabulous program with two terrific teens who express themselves.
Happy summer! May your sunscreen be strong!
“Reading is like a workout for your brain, except you can do it in pajamas and no one yells at you for skipping leg day.” Keerthi
SUMMER SAFETY
In the United States in 2024, heat killed more people than hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, or wind, according to the National Weather Service. Sun exposure damages skin, and sweating dehydrates the body. When our body gets too hot, it stops functioning properly, which can lead to a life-threatening situation. Here are our tips to keep you cool and stay safe when it’s hot, hot, hot.
Check the weather before beginning activities.
Dress appropriately with light-weight and loose-fitting clothing.
Wear sunscreen and sunblock and reapply every few hours.
Drink plenty of water. When working outdoors, OSHA recommends drinking 8 ounces every 20 minutes, even if you are not thirsty.
Avoid direct sun and seek shade.
Listen to your body and seek medical treatment when necessary.
THE HOURS between the Bells- A SUMMER SURVIVAL GUIDE
by Tia
Summer is for getting our spark back, for letting go of those pesky quotidian obligations, and for letting in the sunlight of all our passions. So don't succumb to those late mornings and screen lit nights. As soon as routine evaporates, the mind dulls. Pick up a book, not because a teacher asked you to, but because the language rearranges your thinking. Learn a new skill—coding, cooking, guitar—anything tactile, with rules and failures and strange new words. Write something - it doesn't have to be an essay - just a fragment. Pursue creativity and chase knowledge - take an online course, journal, paint. Volunteer at the library, take a part-time job, or help your neighbor repaint a fence—and somewhere in the motion, you pick up teamwork, patience, and responsibility. Learn a new language, so one day you can make small talk with the locals in some foreign country. Even a puzzle sharpens your logic. A recipe strengthens your focus. Set one small goal, then another.
Continual learning in the summer isn’t about staying “productive”—that tired word. It’s about refusing to let your thoughts grow thin. You listen to podcasts while taking a stroll in the park. You ask your grandfather how radios used to work. You sit still and you think. There are no marksheets, only wonder.
Because when school returns, and the world starts up again, you’ll be someone who lived these months with intention, not inertia. You’ll return with more than rest. You’ll return resilient, alive, still curious.
