Take Time for Daddy!

Take Time for Daddy!

Miracle Moment®

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Billy Graham

Message from Executive Director, Cynthia Brian

My Daddy was my hero. My Daddy was a mountain of a man. He was as strong as an ox, could lift his five children at one time, and swim upstream while pulling a parade of rafts filled with frolicking children. Working on our ranch provided lots of natural exercise: plowing fields, mending fences, fixing tractors and trailers, building barns, digging reservoirs, and running irrigation pipes. He ate three healthful meals a day mostly harvested from our farm, surrounded by true love and admiration from my Mom and we children. They both worked from five in morning when the first rooster crowed until seven at night when the last lamb had been put in the barn, yet we kids were always their first concern. We were taught the value of hard work and the pride it reaped.

I can still hear him in the morning, climbing the stairs to wake us, whistling happily and announcing, "Wake up, sleepy heads, it is a beautifulday!" He would lift us onto the caterpillar tractor to plow the fields with him. When we were eight he taught us how to drive. In the springtime, he'd find baby jack rabbits whose mothers had been killed. He would stop the tractor, put the bunnies in his coat pocket, and bring them home to us to nurture until they were old enough to fend for themselves.

If anything broke, he could fix it. If we misbehaved, he never yelled. He would look at us with his big brown eyes and let us know we had disappointed him. He would saddle the horses for us, tighten our wire ski bindings, and make us a special concoction of warm, sweet milk with bread when we were sick.

He'd pile all seven of us in the Willie jeep, and straight up the hill we'd drive to have a picnic. Being with Daddy was better than being at Disneyland.

I remembered how he cried when he walked me down the aisle on my wedding day, and how, at the funeral of my sixteen-year-old brother, he help up my Mom and the rest of us who were near collapsing. During the 33 hours of birthing my first baby, he was there. Whenever anyone needed help, it was our Dad they called.

Daddy was our tower of strength, our lion in winter, our gentle, patient, loving father. I miss him.

This Father’s Day, let’s honor the magnificent men who truly care for their families. They are the unsung heroes and deserve a celebration.

Happy Father’s Day to all the good men whom we are privileged to call “Dad”.

We salute you as men and loving daddies! Keep caring and sharing. The world of children is depending on you for guidance.

THANK YOU!

Following is an excerpt from 'The Ties That Bind' by Erma Bombeck

“One morning my father didn’t get up and go to work. He went to the hospital and died the next day. I hadn’t thought that much about him before. He was just someone who left and came home and seemed glad to see everyone at night. He opened the jar of pickles when no one else could. He was the only one in the house who wasn’t afraid to go into the basement by himself. He cut himself shaving, but no one kissed it or got excited about it. It was understood that when it rained, he got the car and brought it around to the door. When anyone was sick, he went out to get the prescription filled. He took lots of pictures, but he was never in them... I didn’t know his leaving would hurt so much."
